Analysis of past students work discussing the use of four micro elements

Mute:

This opening sequence was very well produced, considering all four vital micro elements. For instance, sound. There is a soundtrack and non-diegetic sound presented in this sequence as well as special effects e.g. when the little boy is pressing the button on his controller whilst playing on Xbox, you can hear gun shots. Furthermore, cinematography has been well illustrated in this opening sequence. For example, cinematography in this sequence was very good as they used a wide range of shot types, from long shots, mid shots, and close ups which kept us as the audience interested as we got to see the surroundings and the character. Also, they created an enigma by purposefully doing close ups of characters lips, making us wonder what the significance was and why we kept being shown those shots. They altered from deep focus to shallow focus which I thought was really good as it ensured that our attention was focused solely on what they wanted to show us. There is no use of artificial lighting in this sequence, only natural lighting which I believe they could have improved on. They used several different settings which kept us as the audience enticed as we followed this girl on her journey. The use of different settings shows us that they had planned and considered their settings carefully pre-production. In my opinion, even though this group had considered all the micro elements and shot very well, they lacked illustrating the genre of the film. For example, the typography was very vague and didn’t put across what the genre of the film is. Therefore, i would give this groups opening sequence a high level three.

Fearless:

This opening sequence had demonstrated the use of all four micro elements in its opening sequence. For instance, cinematography in this sequence had been used. For example, they had presented a variety of range of shot types and their close had an impact on the audience. Furthermore, the lighting in this sequence was very good. Low key lighting was used and black was also hugely used, which connotes darkness and evil emphasising the thriller genre. Another micro element that they had used well was sound. For example, the sequence started off with a voiceover which sounded very monotonous enhancing the thriller genre. Also, the soundtrack used was very eerie and sinister emphasising the thriller genre. Moving on, in this opening sequence editing had been used very well. For instance, the typography used was very good; their font clearly reflected the genre of the movie, thriller. Also, there were use of transitions e.g. there were Shots faded in and out and some shots had been sped up increasing the pace and some had been slowed down decreasing the pace, this was done for effect and gave the opening sequence more of a chilling and known feel especially combined with the soundtrack. To conclude, i would give this opening sequence a level four, because not only had they successfully used all four micro elements but unlike Mute they had clearly presented the genre of the film, a thriller.
